Local History and Economy

The District of Vieux-Fort is located on the southernmost part of Saint Lucia. From the lookout points of hills such as Moule-a-Chique, Beausejour, Vieux-Fort Quarry, Pierrot and Morne Le Blanc, one is greeted with a panoramic view of fertile land sweeping towards the Vieux-Fort Bay - washed on the eastern side by the ever active Atlantic Ocean and soothed on the western side by the calm and serene Caribbean Sea.

The beautiful features of the Vieux-Fort landscape were undoubtedly attractive to the Dutch and French colonists, the first Europeans who established a settlement in the area sometime in the 17th century.  Over the years the island was a prize handed back and forth amongst the warring French and English empires.

Once home to an American Airbase (during World War II), the district is supported by well-planned infrastructure including a hospital, modern international airport and seaports.  Today the district offers a healthy economy based on a mix of industrial and commercial enterprises, a diverse network of small, locally-owned businesses, professional services, modern housing estates, hotels and other tourism-related facilities.  Vieux-Fort is an attractive location to work and live…and to visit.

In the midst of this burgeoning economy, the ethic of environmental protection and conservation has not been lost.  The district is fully supportive of the Sustainable Livelihoods Project of the Pointe Sable Environmental Protection Area, [PSEPA] under the auspices of the Saint Lucia Natural Trust.

The main town of the District of Vieux-Fort is also called Vieux-Fort.  Also in the district are many smaller, well-defined communities such as Augier, La Ressource, Dierre Morne, Black Bay, Grace, Pierrot, to name a few.  The area offers an interesting diversity of places to explore for their recreational, cultural, social and other charming characteristics. The District of Vieux-Fort has so much to offer that it has often been referred to as the New Frontier for development in Saint Lucia.
